Irving Karanek was a defense attorney best remembered for representing Charles Manson and the the Onion Field kidnapper Jimmy Lee Smith. Kanarek attended the University of Washington as an undergraduate and Loyola school of law and was later admitted to the California Bar in 1957. Kanarek's started off as an engineer with the North American Aviation (NAA), where he invented a corrosion inhibitor for Inhibited Red Fuming Aqua Fortis for the Army's Project Nike. Unfortunately, he lost his security clearance while still employed as a search engineer for North American Aviation when US Air Force revoked it and was restored on 21 September 1955 and later dismissed from NAA.
Throughout his later life, Kanarek lived in Orange County, California, before he had a mental breakdown in 1989 that led to him losing his law license and ending up in some financial crisis. He died at 100 on 2 September 2020.
