Maria's career began in 1970 where she became the special reporter for Globo Repórter co presenting with Sergio Chapelin. Although she faced many obstacles largely due to the color of her skin she rose above it to become the first black television reporter in Brazil the first to present the seven o’clock news, and the first to command Fantástico. She got her degree in journalism from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro whilst holding two jobs, working at Globo and a telephone company. Maria became known for reports of her travels of places to like the Sahara Desert and Falklands War. She also interviewed celebrities like Madonna and Michael Jackson. On top of that Maria was a Philanthropist who travelled around the world to help the less privileged in 3rd world countries.
