Treholt was a junior Norwegian Labour Party politician, a medium-level official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and journalist who secretly worked for the KGB before his scandal. He was charged with treason after providing the Soviet Union with information on the Norwegian defense plans for northern Norway, weaknesses in the Norwegian Armed Forces and mobilization plans. He also told them about the most efficient way to take out Norwegian soldiers and Norwegian emergency plans. He was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years in prison but he only served nine in a maximum security prison, he was released because of his ill health. Treholt relocated to Russia after his release and never stopped insisting on his innocence. He wrote three memoirs, the first of which, Alene was written by him when he was in prison and published in 1985. The book sold very well so much so that it won a literally prize.
