He was also a special assistant to Mayor Richard Riordan and chief deputy to the council, President John Ferraro. Thomas LaBonge was an advocate for Griffith Park, one of the largest urban parks in the country, which was in his old council district. LaBonge gave up the ghost on January 7, 2021, at the age of 67
