She became an internet sensation when she danced excitedly upon meeting President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama at the White House in 2016.
McLaurin was born in Cheraw, South Carolina. She grew up in a house without electricity using a kerosome lamp as a source of light. She never received education past the third grade and got married at the age 13. She later moved to New Jersey during the Great Migration and also moved to Washington DC to be closer to her sister after her husband was killed in a bar fight. During her lifetime she worked as a seamstress, domestic worker and even managed a laundry shop.
From the late 70s McLaurin volunteered about 40 hours a week at Ruth Public Charter School. She also did volunteer work for other organizations in her community so much so that in 2013 she received a volunteer community service award from Mayor Vincent C Gray.
