Michael Apted was renowned British producer, director, filmmaker and documentarian who worked in television and directed the Up documentary series from 1964-2019. He started his career in television as a trainee for six months at Granada Television in Manchester, where he worked as a researcher and became well known through one of his first projects at Granada: the Up series, which started in 1964 as a profile of 14 seven year old children for the current affairs series; World Action. Michael Apted made his first feature film in 1972, The Triple Echo and also directed two films for David Puttnam and also directed the Hollywood-financed Agatha. Most of Michael Apted feature films since then were based on or surrounding a female protagonist.
During his time in television, Michael Apted won many British Academy Awards, including two Flaherty Documentary Awards and a BAFTA for Best Dramatic Director.
Unfortunately, Michael Apted breathe his last at his Los Angeles home town on 7 January 2021 at the age of 79.
