Quant attended illustration and art education at Goldsmiths College from which she received a degree in 1953. After graduating she decided to pursue a career in fashion and so she apprenticed with Erik Braagaard. Initially she sold clothes from wholesale before deciding to start designing her own clothes, a fit that proved to be successful. In no time she was employing a handful of sewing-machine operators and by 1966 she was working with a total of 18 manufacturers. Some of her successful designs include the miniskirt and hotpants. A decade later after she started Mary Quant, it was a global brand, with licenses all over the world with sales that reached $20 million. She received several awards like being the first winner of the Dress of the Year award and she was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire for her outstanding contribution to the fashion industry. She was also an author of several books and was named one of the "fashion revolutionaries" in New York by Women's Wear Daily in 1966.
