Anders Borje Salming was a Swedish ice hockey player and one of the first Europeans to make an impact in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was named to 6 consecutive NHL All Stars team. He played the position of defenseman for 23 seasons for clubs like Brynas IF, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and AIK. He also played for the Swedish national team winning two World Championship Medals.

Salming was born in Kiruna. His father was a miner who died when Salming was 5 in a mining accident. Salming played for Kiruna AIF in Sweden's division 2 from 1967 to 1970 after that he went and played for Brynas from 1970 to 1973, the team won league championships between 1971 and 1972. This attracted attention of Gerry McNamara a scout from Toronto Maple Leafs who was impressed by Salming and ended up signing him in 1973. He left the team in 1989 after playing for them for 16 years, Salming went on to sign with Detroit Red Wings playing one season with them before retiring. Salming was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1996.
