Samuel Lawrence Katz was a pediatrician and virologist, with a career devoted to infectious disease vaccine research and development. He did his medical internship and pediatrics residency training and started his journey with research fellowship in virology and infectious diseases and he became a staff member at the Children's Hospital working with Nobel Laureate and John F Enders. He chaired the Committee of Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and he was the winner of the Albert B Sabin Gold Medal award for his contribution to the vaccine discoveries during his career in 2003.
Born and raised in Manchester, New Hampshire, he attended the Dartmouth College and Harvard Medical School, graduating with an honour’s degree. Katz was also actively involved in finding vaccines for other pathogens such as polio, HIV, rubella, and pertussis. Katz died at the age of 95 in North California.
