As CEO, he handled the $13 billion acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, making Marriott the world’s largest hotel chain. He was also on the Board of Directors for Walmart and Microsoft. Sorenson was born in Tokyo, Japan. His father was a Lutheran Pastor and his mother was a public school teacher. The family moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, when the boy was just seven years-old. During the dawn of the global COVID-19 lockdown crisis, Arne commendably forewent his salary to insure pay for Marriott’s affected staff. At 62 years-old, Arne passed away from pancreatic cancer in his Washington DC home. He worked nearly every day until only a couple of weeks before his unfortunate death.
