Verlaine was born in Denville, New Jersey and as a child he loved poetry and played the piano but switched to saxophone in middle school after hearing a record by Stan Getz. He picked up the guitar after being inspired by hearing the Rolling Stones' 19th Nervous Breakdown. Through experiments, Verlaine developed a distinct sound that wasn't easily categorized. Verlaine's music career began after he escaped from Sanford school, a private school he attend, to New York to pursue music full time. It is there that he formed the band Television with Richard Hell a friend he had met at the private school. The band released two successful albums before disbanding in 1978. In 1980 he began his solo career releasing a self-tittled album. He went on to collaborate with several artist. He released over 8 solo albums during his career.
