Rafael Viñoly Beceiro was an award winning Uruguayan-born architect based in New York best known for his major commercial and cultural buildings in nearly a dozen countries. Beceiro attended the University of Buenos Aires, receiving a Diploma in Architecture and a Master of Architecture in 1968 and 1969 respectively. He formed the "Estudio de Arquitectura Manteola-Petchersky-Sánchez Gómez-Santos-Solsona-Viñoly firm with six associates in 1964 and his practise later became one of the largest architectural practices in South America. In 1975 he and his family moved to America where he taught the Harvard Graduate School of Design. In 1983 Beceiro founded the firm Rafael Viñoly Architects PC with his first project being the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. He expanded his reach and ended up being an internationally recognized architect. His company also grew so much so that the firm opened offices in New York City, Palo Alto, London, Manchester, Abu Dhabi, and Buenos Aires. Beceiro was a recipient of numerous awards like the International Fellow, The Royal Institute of British Architects in 2006 and Medal of Honor, American Institute of Architects, New York City Chapter in 1995.
