Beathard's early encounter with football was at El Segundo High School playing football as a tailback. He continued playing well into his college years at El Camino Junior College. Unfortunately he was not drafted and spent the next few years playing playing semi-pro football and working various non-football jobs. In 1963 he joined the Kansas City Chiefs as a part-time scout and also served as a scout for the Atlanta Falcons from 1968 through 1971. In 1978, Beathard was named general manager of the Washington Redskins and went on to have a successful career spanning almost four decades in the NFL. He was inducted into the Cal Poly Mustangs Athletics Hall of Fame in 1988, the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Chargers Hall of Fame in 2018. He retired in 2000.
