In 1972 co-founded radio giant Clear Channel Communications, which he used to run advertisements for his businesses. He went on to own companies like San Antonio Force, Denver Nuggets, the Minnesota Vikings, and was the namesake of the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. McCombs was on the Forbes 400 list of richest Americans winning awards like Texas Treasure Business Award for providing employment to Texas citizens and Texas Business Hall of Fame in 1998. He was also a philanthropist who donated $30 million in 2005 to Detection and Treatment of Cancer which was later named after him and his wife.
