Allan A. Ryan Jr was an American attorney, author, university and law school professor often referred to as the Nazi hunter for finding, prosecuting and expelling anyone in the United States who had assisted the Nazis when he served as director of a Justice Department. Ryan attended Dartmouth College and magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School. After graduating he served as a law clerk to Justice Byron White of the Supreme Court of the United States and as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. When he was appointed director a Justice Department in the early 1980s to identify and prosecute Nazi collaborators living in the United States. He paired prosecutors with Holocaust historians for effective results. Ryan was also appointed in 1983 to investigate whether Army intelligence officers aided Klaus Barbie, a notorious paid informant SS officer in escaping from Europe. Ryan left government for private practice and went back in the Boston area, where he worked as a lawyer for Harvard University. He also taught law at Boston College Law School. Ryan also wrote six books throughout his career.
