John Edward McVay was an American football coach and executive best known for his National Football League (NFL) career. McVay was born in Bellaire, Ohio. He played football from high school up to University. His coaching career started in Ohio where he couched several high schools before going to the University of Dayton where he was the head coach. In 1976, he went to the NFL New York Giants as an assistant coach and was promoted to head couch in October of that same year, he was fired two years later. McVay moved on to an administrative position with the San Francisco 49ers in 1980 and retired in 1996, his collaboration with head coach Bill Walsh earned him one of the most successful dynasties in NFL history.
