He won an NBA championship with the Celtics in 1981. Ford was born in Atlantic City and attended high school at Holy Spirit High School where he played basketball for the school team. Ford then signed to play at Villanova University, helping the team advance to the regional finals of the 1970 NCAA tournament. In 1972, Ford was drafted by the Detroit Pistons. In 1978 he was traded to the Boston Celtics. He retired after the 1981–82 season. Subsequently Ford pursued a career in coaching. He became an assistant coach with Boston Celtics, first under KC Jones and then Jimmy Rodgers helping them win the 1984 and 1986 Championships. He was promoted to head coach in 1990. He went on to coach numerous teams before Ford then became a scout for the 76ers.
