He began skating at the age of 6 after his mother enrolled him in into Sokolniki skating school. He had his first professional skating experience with Lyudmila Pakhomova at the CSKA Moscow. Although he had less experience at that time Gorshkov got much encouragement from Pakhomova who believed they would be champions. They made an international debut together in December 1966, after having gone through some through training and they competed for Dynamo. It was during these moments they developed a strong feeling towards each other leading to a marriage proposal. Their first won world title came in 1970 prompting their marriage to proceed in 1971, as promised by Pakhomova that when they win, they will get married. In 1974, they created a dance which was later converted into a compulsory dance by ISU. The duo won their sixth World title in 1976 in Sweden and the duo retired from the competition a year later.
Gorshkov served as chairman for the ISU, and he was president of a Regional Public Charitable Foundation for the Arts and Sports named Pakhomova. Him and his wife who later died in 1986, of leukaemia were inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1988.
