Rhodes taught himself how to play the guitar and the bass soon after before his 13th birthday. He moved to Austin, Texas to pursue a career in music where he performed with a few local bands, gaining experience and making connections. After about four years, he moved to Memphis, to work with Charlie Rich's son, Alan Rich. In 1977, Rhodes moved to Nashville, and he joined local band The Nerve with Ricky Rector and Danny Rhodes. He also worked as a demo musician and then as a session player Tree Publishing Company. Over the many years since then, Rhodes worked with numerous artists, including many chart-toppers from the '90s. He won Bass Player of the Year as awarded by the Academy of Country Music in 2016 and was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2019.
