Grant enlisted with the U.S Navy before attending the University of Minnesota where he was a three-sport athlete, in football, basketball, and baseball. After graduating he played professional football for the Minneapolis Lakers in the (NBA) for two seasons winning the 1950 finals. He then moved to the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL and played for them for one season, and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL from 1953 to 1956. In 1957 Grant became the coach for Winnipeg Blue Bombers making him the youngest head coach in CFL history after accepting the job at 29 years old. During his ten seasons as head coach he led the team to six Grey Cup appearances winning four championships in 1958, 1959, 1961, and 1962. He then moved to Minnesota Vikings where he coached for 18 years.
