In 1952 Lerner started his own real estate company with US $250 he had borrowed from his wife. His interest in real estate was picked when he sold homes on the weekends whilst in law school. His company Lerner Enterprises became a huge success and went on to become the largest private landowner in the Washington metropolitan area, owning commercial, retail, residential, and hotel properties. In 2006 he bought Washington Nationals and oversaw the team's baseball championship in 95 years. Lerner was also a philanthropist with his foundation The Annette M. and Theodore N. Lerner Family Foundation which provides support to many organizations. Forbes magazine named him the richest person in Maryland in 2015.
