Hazel McCallion nee Journeaux was a Canadian politician who was the fifth mayor of Mississauga known for being the longest-serving mayor in the city's history having being elected in 1978 until 2014 serving 12 consecutive terms. Journeaux attended business secretarial school in Quebec City and Montreal. She played for a professional women's ice hockey team while attending school in Montreal with her two sisters. She was transferred to Toronto to help set up Kellogg’s office in 1942.
Journeaux's career in politics began in 1967 right after she left the corporate world. She served in a couple of boards like Streetsville Planning Board and served as Chair of the Board in 1964 and 1966-68 respectively before elected as Mayor of Streetsville in 1970. McCallion became the first mayor of a major municipality to submit the annual operating budget to residents for their input and scrutiny. She was also first mayors of major municipalities to be openly committed to a pay-as-you-go philosophy. The City has not had to borrow money since 1978 and is currently debt-free. She was inducted into the Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame.
