Élisabeth Tshala Muana known professionally as Tshala Muana, was a singer and dancer from Congo. She was known for her music that was sung in her native language carrying the message that addressed social concerns, women's strengths and decrying abuse. Muana was born in Lubumbashi, DRC the second of ten children born to a soldier and housewife. As a teenager she had an arranged marriage that she left after the death of her infant child. She moved to Kinshasa where she became a dancer and singer. In 1980 she moved to Ivory Cost where she pursued a solo career. In the 2000s, Muana was elected to serve in the Congo parliament. She used her time there and her influence to champion issues involving women, children and the poor. Due to this she became widely known as Mamu Nationale which translates to Mother of the Nation.
