Cheung Yin "Ellen"/ Zhang Yan popularly known by her pseudonym Xi Xi was an award winning Hong Kong author and poet. Xi Xi was born in Shanghai, China and In 1950 she migrated to Hong Kong with her parents and by the time she was in junior secondary school she was writing for the local newspaper and magazines. Her first published piece was a poem published in Everyone’s Literature in the 1950s. She also won the first prize in the senior section of a writing competition when she was in form 3. Xi Xi went on to attend the Grantham College of Education and after graduating she became a teacher at Farm Road Government Primary School. In the 1960s Xi Xi began writing poetry, novels, essays, fairy tales, translated literature and TV screenplays. On top of all that she wrote for various newspapers, magazines and pioneered the field of experimental film. Her book titled My City published in 1979 was a huge success so much so that it was ranked 51st by the Yazhou Zhoukan as one of the 100 best Chinese novels in the 20th century. Xi Xi was the recipient of the Newman Prize for Chinese Literature.
