Tobin was born in Aubrey, Texas. She made her first onstage appearance when she was 12 with the North Texas Stage Band. By the time she was 16, Tobin was singing in clubs like the Slyvan Club and theaters in Beaumont, Dallas and Houston. In 1935 she married Harry James at the age 16 and went on to have two sons with him.
Tobin continued singing with many bands like the Goodman band, Tommy Jones and his Orchestra and many more. She continued singing up to 2003. In 2021 a biography of Tobin was published.
