His acting career began in the 1970s with small roles on television shows like Little House on the Prairie, Gunsmoke and Wonder Woman. James at 15 was the show that cemented his stardom and made him a teenage idol. Kerwin continued acting through the 1980s and into 1990 appearing in the 1985 movie titled Enemy Mine and Outbreak. He took a break from acting in the mid 1990s following his battle with drug addiction. He returned to the screen in 2022 for The Wind & the Reckoning, filmed in Hawaii.
